  1. Does plaquenil lower immune system

I started on it just less than 2 weeks ago, and I'm surrounded by ill people at work and already have a bit of a cold (nothing severe). it is "milder" than a lot of the other dmards in terms of side effects and activity x It is listed as having a mild immunosuppressant effect in my book on RA, but one of the reasons for the blood tests is to check that your immune system is not being suppressed too much (eg checking your white blood cell levels), so you shouldn't be completely vulnerable. Even after several years of taking lots of drugs I've not found any difference in the number of colds etc I get, and loads of people on here are teachers etc who get a lot of exposure to colds and coughs without too much problem.

Aug 02, 2010 All work by suppressing the immune system. If he wants this type of drug he can try to balance control of his autoimmune disease with the risk of infection. What I mean is He might want to consider taking a lower dose of Plaquenil. This won't suppress his immune system quite as much but it also won't completely control his Sjogrens. It alters your immune system, but as far as I know, it doesn't actually suppress it. Plus, if you have only been on it a month, it's probably not built up enough in your body to have much of an effect. I have actually been way HEALTHIER than ever since being on Plaquenil AND Methotrexate, which DOES suppress the immune system - go figure! I usually start with a low dose of 100-200 mg per day to help the patient adapt to the medicine and allow an increase in dose later to as high as 300-400 mg per day. Less common adverse effects of Plaquenil are drug-induced skin rashes. These rashes may consist of many small red bumps or bright red skin covering most of the body.

Polly Thank you both, I thought it shouldn't be too bad and that it's pretty mild in comparison to other drugs. Always better to be well informed and I remember the consultant saying its bit a bad time of year to start on it as I've missed all the bugs round Christmas time so thought there may be a slim chance of it being suppressed. But do look after yourself, and make sure you eat well and don't get too tired as if you have a cold already you need to pamper yourself a bit more than you would have before RA.

  4. Mar 23, 2014 I doubt it is the Plaquenil affecting your immune system, but the actual Lupus itself as it can affects the white blood cells and lower them so we get every infection going. You need to speak to your rheumy for more clarification in your case.

Plaquenil is prescribed as a disease-modifier, in other words, to decrease pain, decrease swelling, and prevent joint damage and disability. It is not known how Plaquenil works but researchers believe that Plaquenil interferes with communication between cells within the immune system. Ultimately, it is thought to block proinflammatory. Feb 04, 2015 I have been taking plaquenil for almost a year, does this drug lower your immune system's effective? Asked by fredkintner Updated 4 February 2015 Topics Hi everyone. Just wondered if anyone can tell me whether hydroxy suppresses the immune system. And if so, to what extent. I know it's not as harsh as some of the other drugs but just wondered what people's experiences are.
