Hydroxychloroquine is one of several antimalarial drugs that have anti-inflammatory effects useful in other diseases. It is licensed in the UK for the treatment of malaria. Hydroxychloroquine is particularly effective for systemic lupus erythematosus SLE and discoid lupus erythematosus DLE. Hydroxychloroquine belongs to the family of medicines called antiprotozoals. Protozoa are tiny, one-celled animals. Some are parasites that can cause many different kinds of infections in the body. This medicine is used to prevent and to treat malaria and to treat some conditions such as liver disease caused by protozoa. Hydroxychloroquine HCQ, sold under the brand name Plaquenil among others, is a medication used for the prevention and treatment of certain types of malaria. Specifically it is used for chloroquine-sensitive malaria. Other uses include treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and porphyria cutanea tarda. It is taken by mouth.

Taking hydroxychloroquine long-term or at high doses may cause irreversible damage to the retina of your eye. Hydroxychloroquine is also an antirheumatic medicine and is used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus.

Re plaquneil and hair bleaching I read about Plaquenil hair bleaching on the Mayo Clinic or Johns Hopkins web site. I was trying to look up something about hair because my hair is white and I've been on Plaquenil for 4 years and my hair is turning yellow on top. Side effects are uncommon; however, a few people may develop a rash, indigestion, diarrhoea, headache, blurred vision, darkening of the skin, or bleaching of the hair. Hydroxychloroquine can aggravate pre-existing psoriasis. Hair pigment changes are uncommon with hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil, but most certainly can occur. They can also occur with chloroquine, a related drug. I have included a reference for interest.
