A small number of children, teenagers, and young adults (up to 24 years of age) who took antidepressants ('mood elevators') such as sertraline during clinical studies became suicidal (thinking about harming or killing oneself or planning or trying to do so). Children, teenagers, and young adults who take antidepressants to treat depression or other mental illnesses may be more likely to become suicidal than children, teenagers, and young adults who do not take antidepressants to treat these conditions. However, experts are not sure about how great this risk is and how much it should be considered in deciding whether a child or teenager should take an antidepressant. You should know that your mental health may change in unexpected ways when you take sertraline or other antidepressants even if you are an adult over 24 years of age. You may become suicidal, especially at the beginning of your treatment and any time that your dose is increased or decreased. You, your family, or your caregiver should call your doctor right away if you experience any of the following symptoms: new or worsening depression; thinking about harming or killing yourself, or planning or trying to do so; extreme worry; agitation; panic attacks; new or worsening anxiety; difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep; aggressive behavior; irritability; acting without thinking; severe restlessness; and frenzied abnormal excitement. Be sure that your family or caregiver knows which symptoms may be serious so they can call the doctor if you are unable to seek treatment on your own. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a black box warning — the agency’s strictest warning — for all selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) antidepressants regarding their association with suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Without treatment for depression, pregnant women face additional health risks. While antidepressants are designed to decrease the symptoms of depression, they occasionally have the opposite effect and can increase suicidal thoughts and actions, especially in children and adolescents. That warning was updated in 2007, with the FDA specifying that the risk is highest for young adults ages 18 to 24. Clinical studies found no significant increase of suicidality among adults older than 24 and a decrease in suicidal thoughts among adults 65 and older. The most severe cases may include miscarriage or suicide. Many SSRIs are intended for use in adults only, but they can be prescribed to children, teens and young adults as an off-label treatment of depression and anxiety disorders. Doctors and patients must carefully weigh these risks against those of SSRIs and birth defects. SSRIs work by restoring the chemical balance in the brain by increasing serotonin levels. But this can result in mood swings and may lead to worsening depression or anxiety.

Dear all, Im experiencing the following situation which perhaps some of you can advise me better. History Back in 2005, I experienced a sleep disorder condition that lasted everyday for almost a year. exercising, meditation, melatonin etc, all did not work. I would sleep with ease, but would remember my dreams very clearly and wake up feeling not rested and tired through the day. But after a year of torment, the condition just randomly left me after a year when I started full time work & undergrad studies. Over the years I do still get this problem especially when Im overseas for short / long trips. It seems quite random as sometimes it happens, sometimes it don't. Present The same issue revisited me and its Day 6 already. Same thing, I would go to sleep but having very vivid dreams (not nightmares) and wake up feeling tired / unrested.
