Visual field tests take a long time to complete and can be difficult for patients. A traditional 10-2 test takes at least 15 minutes per eye, and if a 24-2 is added, a patient is taking the tests. One such commonly used medication for dermatologic and rheumatologic inflammatory conditions is hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil, a chloroquine derivative. It is used to treat many diseases including malaria, rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. A baseline ocular examination is recommended within the first year of starting Plaquenil. The baseline exam should include best corrected distance visual acuity BCVA, an automated threshold visual field VF of the central 10 degrees with retesting if an abnormality is noted, and spectral domain ocular coherence tomography SD-OCT.

Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine.

The latter provides the equivalent of an objective visual field and is especially useful to verify early or unreliable field changes. Fields may be sufficient for initial screening where SD-OCT is not available, and SD-OCT change is unlikely if a reliable field shows no losses at all. In rare cases, Plaquenil can adversely affect the eyes, and patients taking this medicine should be seen by an ophthalmologist at least once a year. Leflunomide works. Chloroquine & Hydroxychloroquine supporting chemo effectiveness and. Mechanism. Endosomal Acidification Inhibitor Chloroquine is a lysosomotropic agent that prevents endosomal acidification 1. It accumulates inside the acidic parts of the cell, including endosomes and lysosomes. This accumulation leads to inhibition of lysosomal enzymes that require an acidic pH, and prevents fusion of endosomes and lysosomes.
